mad men

In madmen, series 1 episode 1 there are many camera shots and ‘mise en scene’ which links to the representation of gender.

The camera uses pan in the office work place to reflect that that is where all the girls work, and that the males are secluded in to their own offices showing they are more important to the business. They have the power and privacy that the females don’t which shows that they are typical businessmen and are dominating it.

Another shot used is a medium close up, this occurs in the bar whilst don draper Is drinking whiskey and this scene is generally showing us he spends a lot of time at the bar after work. He avoids going home to his family and results to alcohol instead, also this drink can be considered a ‘typical mans drink’ so it shows him sticking to the stereotypes men are represented with.

Opie self-portrait

Which tools did you use to complete the task and describe how you used them to complete your self portrait?

I used the polygonal lasso tool to go round each shape and select whatever I wanted to colour in. I used the dropper tool to get to the closest swatch colour possible so it was an exact match to the original picture. I also used the paint bucket tool to quickly colour in each shape as opposed to colouring it in using the paint brush which would take a lot longer to fill.  At the end, I used the pencil tool to go around the eye shape and make them more prominent and then went over any bits I missed. The zoom tool was also involved for precision.

Were there any parts of the task/specific tools which you found difficult and if so, what were they and why?

I had some difficulty with the layers and which order they needed to be placed to show everything in the right order. I eventually figured out how to re arrange the layers so that the face was below all the facial features like eyes, lips, nose etc.

Finally, how successful were you in completing the given brief and what improvements would you make next time?

I think I was successful during this brief and completed my self portrait in ample time,  leaving time at the end to change anything I wasn’t happy with, for example the neck.
